Most computers can operate faster (just remove all the programs you have on them!), and as technology continues to develop and expand, they most likely will have even faster speeds. After all, who would have believed even 10 to 15 years ago that instant, real-time communication would be possible?
The advances in technology have made it possible for users to take advantage of the many downloads that are now available. It once took several hours if not days to add new programs and software to computers; now some of them take only about five minutes. Some downloads still require a few hours, especially the larger ones. However, they’re almost always worth the time it takes to add them to computers.
Communication downloads, for example, allow people to interact in real time. Depending on the type of communication software used, it is possible to now have a face-to-face conversation with someone who is literally on the other side of the world. An old cartoon depicting life in the 21st century depicted this idea; now it’s a reality.
Other downloads are designed to allow computers to operate faster. These downloads have either replaced or completely eliminated the different steps that once were necessary to access certain types of information. What once took a number of keystrokes or mouse clicks may now only require one.
As operating systems companies continue to improve their products, other companies will have to keep up. Everyone is going to want their computers to work faster, and the failure or delay of a company to maintain or update their product to provide this additional speed may mean a loss of its customer base. Companies should remember, however, that users not only want their computers to work fast, they want them to work right. Product quality should never be sacrificed for higher speeds.
